Advice to my 21-Year-Old-Self

  1. Trust God more than your parents.
  2. Trust God more than your best friend.
  3. Trust God more than your boss.
  4. Trust God more than your mentor.
  5. Trust God more than your counselor.
  6. Trust God more than your pastor.
  7. Trust God more than your spouse.
  8. Trust God more than the marriage books.
  9. Trust God more than the parenting books.
  10. Trust God more than even your own understanding.

God is your foundation. All else is of man. The Bible is your rock. On it firmly stand. Definitely consider what man says, but filter every word through the Word.

Life will surprise you. Both in good ways and bad. Cling to Christ. Never be shaken. Not all will stay loyal. You too will badly fail. Get up and keep going. One day all will make sense. Have faith and perseverance in the valley. Soak in the beautiful views on the mountain tops.

Life will surprise you. Both in good ways and bad. That bears repeating. Trust will be broken. Trust can be rebuilt. Don’t become jaded. Enter relationships humbly. Not all will turn out as you hope. Some will bring more joy than you can imagine. God means each relationship twist and turn for your good. Trust Him. Trust Him. Trust Him.

Life will surprise you. Both in good ways and bad. Again, that bears a constant repeating. Turn your eyes from your circumstances and pour over the Word. Be encouraged and strengthened by it. Day after day after day. Walk away from bad beliefs. Never walk away from the faith.

Adulthood is very different than expected. Both in good ways and bad. Focus on living for God in the present moment. Right now. Right here. Your story is about His glory. Live solely for His approval. Not for your parents’ approval. Best friend’s approval. Boss’s approval. Mentor’s approval. Pastor’s approval. Or even your spouse’s approval. Live for an audience of solely One. This will be a lifelong lesson.

In conclusion, be assured that the journey ahead is good. Hard. Crazy. Challenging. Incredible. Actually, it’s more like a very, very long crazy, amazing roller-coaster ride than a journey per se. Cling to Christ. He will hold you fast when your world turns upside down. Now go enjoy the ride!
