#82: Andrea Bocelli’s 2020 Live Easter Performance

Eight days have passed since Andrea Bocelli’s live 2020 Easter performance, Music for Hope, while the world was in quarantine desperately longing for hope. Our family was one of the many who were blessed by the record breaking performance during this unprecedented pandemic.

“The iconic classical singer broke online records last weekend…

With more than 2.8 million peak concurrent viewers, the concert was one of the biggest musical live stream performances of all-time as well as the largest simultaneous audience for a classical live stream ever on YouTube.

Since first premiering on YouTube, the performance has been viewed more than 35 million times, including 28 million in the first 24 hours.

Additionally, Andrea Bocelli has 3,670,000 subscribers on YouTube. Clearly, he has impacted countless people.

Celine Dion has said that “if God would have a singing voice, he must sound a lot like Andrea Bocelli”,[1][3] and record producer David Foster has often described Bocelli’s voice as the most beautiful in the world.[4][5]

Yet, did you know the world was close to never knowing Andrea Bocelli, let alone ever hear his beautiful voice?

“Bocelli was born to Alessandro and Edi Bocelli.[11] Doctors had advised the couple to abort him, as they predicted that the child would be born with a disability. It was evident at birth that Bocelli had numerous problems with his sight, and he was eventually diagnosed with congenital glaucoma.[12] He has stated that his mother’s decision to give birth to him and overrule the doctor’s advice was the inspiration for him to oppose abortion.[12]

Until Easter, I did not know this fact. After our family watched his moving performance, we researched him a little so the kids would know him better. I was shocked. Abort Andrea Bocelli? Because of a disability? The thought was unthinkable after having just witnessed this disabled man bless literally the entire globe in one of her greatest hours of need.

Edi Bocelli’s story poignantly reminds us that when a woman makes a hard, selfless, sacrificial choice to stay pregnant against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, God can take that choice and bless it exponentially. He may just bless an entire world that has been completely turned upside down.
