Walking into the library on June 1, I was immediately faced with a large Pride flag hanging down from a table full of books on homosexuality, etc. My first thought was of those who have chosen to boycott Target. Guess they will have to boycott local libraries as well. As I sat down in a chair while my kids found books, I looked back at the table and sighed thinking resignedly, “This is my world.” Just that morning we had read of King Jeroboam making two golden calves and proclaiming to Israel that they were the gods that had delivered them from Egypt. I guess he forgot his history. (I Kings 12:26-28; Exodus 32) How often does humanity do that?
As I walked out of the library with the kids, I asked them if they had noticed the table. They had. Who could have missed it? I told them this is their world and that they would have to choose if they would believe what culture said or what the Bible said. The line in the sand has been drawn. The Venn diagram of the two worldviews has zero overlap.
The rest of the day my heart was heavy with grief. Grief over this blatant repeat of history. Grief over this loud rejection of God’s way. I thought of how patient God was but that thought did not offer me comfort. Not until hours later when I reflected that God was still on His throne even in June did a small ray of comfort penetrate my sad heart.
Then as a new day has dawned, I finally have found a firm anchor of hope and encouragement for the month of June. For those who are finding their heart heavier than normal during these 30 days when we are constantly bombarded with a heartbreaking worldview espoused apparently by the majority, I hope you will find the following three truths worth celebrating not only in June but all year long.
Before launching into those truths, I want to be absolutely clear. God offers salvation to every single person no matter the pronoun chosen or sexual activities practiced (I Corinthians 6:9-11; II Peter 3:9). Though this post might be triggering for some, it is birthed from grief not hate. I have read the homosexual history recorded in the Bible and I know what happened and what is prophesied to happen to the sexually immoral in the future (Genesis 19:24; Revelation 21:8). My heart is broken. However, I have discovered three truths that are worth celebrating.
First Truth: We don’t have to be confused; God has spoken clearly.
Romans 1:18-32, “18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and they exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible mankind, of birds, four-footed animals, and crawling creatures. 24 Therefore God gave them up to vile impurity in the lusts of their hearts, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for falsehood, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged natural relations for that which is contrary to nature, 27 and likewise the men, too, abandoned natural relations with women and burned in their desire toward one another, males with males committing shameful acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a depraved mind, to do those things that are not proper, 29 people having been filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, and evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unfeeling, and unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also approve of those who practice them.”
Second Truth: It’s possible for the whole world to get it wrong.
Genesis 6:5-7:23, “5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of mankind was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually. 6 So the LORD was sorry that He had made mankind on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 Then the LORD said, “I will wipe out mankind whom I have created from the face of the land; mankind, and animals as well, and crawling things, and the birds of the sky. For I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. 9 These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God. 10 And Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11 Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for humanity had corrupted its way upon the earth. 13 Then God said to Noah, “The end of humanity has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of people; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth. 14 Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood…22 So Noah did these things; according to everything that God had commanded him, so he did. Then the LORD said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this generation…11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened. 12 The rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights…23 So He wiped out every living thing that was upon the face of the land, from mankind to animals, to crawling things, and the birds of the sky, and they were wiped out from the earth; and only Noah was left, together with those that were with him in the ark.”
Third Truth: Just ten righteous people can make a huge difference.
Genesis 18:20-33, “17 The LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18 since Abraham will certainly become a great and mighty nation, and in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed? 19 For I have chosen him, so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice, so that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him.”20 And the LORD said, “The outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is indeed great, and their sin is exceedingly grave. 21 I will go down now and see whether they have done entirely as the outcry, which has come to Me indicates; and if not, I will know.” Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham was still standing before the LORD. 23 Abraham approached and said, “Will You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 Suppose there are fifty righteous people within the city; will You indeed sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it? 25 Far be it from You to do such a thing, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?” 26 So the LORD said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the entire place on their account.” 27 And Abraham replied, “Now behold, I have ventured to speak to the Lord, although I am only dust and ashes. 28 Suppose the fifty righteous are lacking five, will You destroy the entire city because of five?” And He said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” 29 And he spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose forty are found there?” And He said, “I will not do it on account of the forty.” 30 Then he said, “Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak; suppose thirty are found there?” And He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.” 31 And he said, “Now behold, I have ventured to speak to the Lord; suppose twenty are found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it on account of the twenty.” 32 Then he said, “Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak only this once: suppose ten are found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it on account of the ten.” 33 As soon as He had finished speaking to Abraham the LORD departed, and Abraham returned to his place.”
Be one of the ten. Be a Noah. Be the light.
